Abstract:

The possible ability of sublingual medication delivery methods to improve drug bioavailability and offer a quick beginning of action has drawn a lot of attention. By putting the medication behind the tongue, it avoids the liver's first-pass processing and enters the bloodstream straight through the sublingual mucosa. This technique is appropriate for a variety of therapeutic agents, such as cardiovascular medications, analgesics, and antiemetics, and it provides a clear benefit for medications that are either heavily metabolized by the liver or poorly absorbed in the gastrointestinal tract.
Fast drugs action, increased patient compliance, and convenience of consumption without the need for drinking or swallowing are some of the main advantages of sublingual drug delivery, which makes it especially helpful for elderly, paediatric, and uncooperative patients. When treating angina pectoris with nitro-glycerine pills or in other emergency conditions that call for rapid pharmacological action, the sublingual route is also beneficial.
Sublingual administration systems employ a variety of formulations, including pills, films, sprays, and lozenges. These systems are made to break down fast, releasing the active ingredient for speedy absorption. To improve efficacy and patient acceptance, formulation factors such as medication solubility, permeability, taste masking, and muco-adhesion qualities are crucial. Microencapsulation and bio adhesive polymers are examples of advanced technologies that have further enhanced the stability and performance of sublingual products.
